About the episode

This week Nicola and Di are back with the second episode of our monthly financial series, Over The Money Fence with Roger Montgomery. This series aims to help you take control of your finances with clarity and confidence. Roger is the Founder and Chairman of Montgomery Investment Management, has over 30 years’ investing experience and is a highly respected financial commentator featuring on various ABC programs, as well as his popular column in The Australian newspaper. He is also the author of best-selling investment guidebook Value.able. In this conversation we chat about the sandwich generation - women in their 50s and 60s who have the dual responsibility of caring for their elderly parents, and trying to support their adult children. We talk about the unique challenges this group faces when it comes to their finances and Roger has some calm and reassuring advice.  Roger takes us through the difference between a financial adviser and a fund manager, and why it’s a good idea to always take your time and get a second opinion. He gives very practical advice for how you can find a good financial adviser to speak to about your finances (listed below), and why it’s in your interests to do so.  Roger also talks about the importance of having conversations with your children and family before it’s too late, about your will and the plans you have for your money after you’re gone. Talk through the plans together and come to some agreements, so there aren’t any unnecessary disputes. As Roger says in this episode - it’s very dangerous to write in a will that you’ll leave everything to your children equally. Tune into the episode to find out why.  Come and see Roger speak in person at our Over The Back Fence live event, happening on the 19th of June at the Woolly Bay Hotel in Sydney.
