SAFE SPACE: What is it like to experience racism?

In this SAFE SPACE episode we're going to find out what it's like to live with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia so we can understand it better and help reduce some of the stigma surrounding this mental wellbeing issue.

Jess sits down with 45-year-old Phoebe Kingston who has a lived experience of mental distress including a diagnosis of Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, and more recently, Dissociative Identity Disorder. 

Phoebe openly shares the stigma and discrimination they've faced, which can often be more distressing than the symptoms of the illness itself. You’ll hear first hand what it's like to experience an acute, psychotic and delusional paranoid episode.

There is so much we can learn from Phoebe including the importance of compassionate listening and human connection, while debunking some common myths and misconceptions surrounding Schizophrenia.

Phoebe works in several roles across the mental health sector, and is a lived experience peer ambassador for SANE Australia. Phoebe has a special interest area in advocacy for alternative understandings of mental & emotional distress. So in this conversation you'll hear Phoebe use non clinical language from a carefully chosen framework of understanding and self-identity. Everyone's personal lived experience story is unique, and Phoebe is termed a ‘critical democratic peer worker’ for their overarching perspectives on mental well being.

SAFE SPACE: What is it like to live with Schizophrenia?

In this first episode of the SAFE SPACE series we're going to find out what it's like to live with an addiction to Methamphetamine, also known as Ice. Jess sits down with 51 year old mum Nicole who survived 28 years of drug abuse and has now been abstinent from all substances for seven and a half years. 

Nicole shares her experience of living with an addiction, the initial allure of the drug, and the devastating impact it had on her life, relationships, and body. There is so much we can learn from Nicole about what addiction does to your brain, the importance of the words we do or don't use when it comes to drug use, as well as the judgements we can unfairly make when we see people affected by drugs.

Nicole is now a senior peer support worker at Mission Australia and helps guide people through addiction into recovery.

Sam Neill ‘No one is more surprised than me‘

AFP Assistant Commissioner Hilda Sirec was one of the first investigators to access the MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine 10 years ago today. It was Hilda’s police training and skillset as a bomb technician which was instrumental in the collection of evidence that formed a major part of the criminal investigation and ultimately the successful criminal trial.

Do you want to talk to yourself in a kinder way when you look in the mirror?

For this episode, I'm joined by Queer, First Nations Triathlete, Model and Disability Advocate James Parr.  James wants to help people change the way they think about themselves and their bodies, so I’ve asked him to help answer my BIG question ‘How can I learn to love my body?’

After losing his leg to amputation, James initially struggled to accept his new body and the way people looked at him differently  Fast forward to now and James has learned to love his post cancer body as an amputee, and in this episode gives us some great food for thought around our own bodies, and also how we might change the way we talk about disability.

According to the latest National mental health and well being survey there has been a huge rise in mental illness for young people, in fact 2 out of 5 young people are struggling. As Parents it can be confronting if your child tells you they’re not coping, so my BIG question this week is: How do I parent my teen through tough times?

To help answer the question I’m also joined by psychiatrist Dr Jo Prendergast as we discuss the red flags to look out for, why trust and boundaries are important for strengthening our relationship, and how to care for yourself when you're struggling to support your teen.

Shaynna says we need to get uncomfortable to make change, and why being silent gives bad behaviour power. And could this be having an impact younger people becoming more obsessed with their appearance?

A new trend called the teenage filter is taking this to a new level where users can turn into a younger version of themselves which is causing everything from tears right through to cosmetic procedures.

So in this episode I’m going to share with you what happened when I tried them out,  and why I think we need to have more conversations around this growing trend.

Are social media filters harmful or helpful? with Jess

Peter Helliar is one of Australia’s favourite comedians, and has been a regular fixture on our TV screens for over 20 years. First appearing on Rove live in 1999, Pete has been entertaining us as a stand up, writer, producer, actor, presenter and author, and makes the difficult business of being funny look dead easy.

Peter Helliar ‘It was the hardest thing I've ever spoken about’

Ian Dickson, aka Dicko, is best known for his role as the tough-love judge on Australian Idol, making him a household name and a staple part of Australian TV & Radio for the last 20 years. Prior to Idol, Dicko spent over 20 years in the record industry in the UK.

But Dicko is far more complex than the person we tuned into each week. In this episode he opens up to Jess about his addiction to fame, and why his confidence was rocked when the phone stopped ringing. Behind his charm and confidence Dicko was battling imposter syndrome, just ‘waiting to be found out’.

Once described as the most hated man in Australia, Dicko says he meant every word he said on TV, and shares the confronting moment he realised his words carried a weight. You're also going to hear who he is when the cameras stop rolling, and you might be surprised to learn that Dicko cares a lot about what other people think of him.

Deni Todorovič  is a queer and human rights activist, an LGBTQIA+ educator, a podcast host and a celebrity fashion stylist. 

In Part one of this chat, Jess and Deni discuss what it means to be non-binary and how we can have better conversations around the spectrum of identity. Deni reveals their path to identifying as gender nonconforming, and why it's important we continue asking questions to learn.  

Growing up Deni endured relentless bullying for their ethnicity and sexuality, and shares how they’ve built resilience through a sense of spiritual protection and the support of both their biological and chosen family.
