Sports biz wrap: AFL Commission conflicts and coach contracts, Women’s World Cup reaches rare heights, benefactor backs athletes, Laker signs record extension & more

Former AFL players are threatening court action against their clubs over the use of an image. It taps into a bigger, more complex issue on athlete image rights in sport.  In the lead up to this weekend’s ‘Showdown’ between AFL rivals Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Power, former players and brothers Troy (Crows) and Shane (Power) Bond are considering court action over the use of an iconic image featured on the Showdown shield and medal. It features an image of the brothers, playing for opposite teams, embracing after Showdown 2 in 1997 (five years ago the brothers talked the moment and the image for AFC Media). Troy and Shane claim that use of the image was unauthorised and have engaged legal representation. In the late 2000s Swans legend Leo Barry sued TAB Corp, who then sued the AFL, over unauthorised use of the image of Leo’s iconic 2005 Grand Final mark.  The matter was settled out of court and Leo now owns the rights to that image. The question of athlete image rights, and who ‘owns’ the images and in what circumstances, have been hotly debated and contested in courts across just about every professional sport, worldwide, over many years.  Such issues are now addressed by the AFL and other major leagues through Collective Bargaining Agreements. Tredders and Monty talk about the issue and the wider considerations, including:  What rights do past players have, whose careers pre-dated such CBAs? How do leagues and clubs leverage player personal brands? What is fair and reasonable for all parties? What are the key facts around the Bond brothers’ complaint and where could the issue end up? Tredders: Why I'm standing my ground

On the back of two devastating losses early in the AFL season, Port Adelaide legend Warren Tredrea believes the relationship between the Power and its coach, Ken Hinkley, is 'untenable'.  In this episode, Tredders unpacks serious concerns for his beloved club.  Even though we're only three rounds in to the season, Tredders says tough calls need to be made at Alberton. Tredders: Port Adelaide coaching situation 'untenable'

‘Sportswashing’ has become a big talking point in recent times but the issue is more complex than it may seem, says Dr David B. Roberts. Put simply, ‘sportswashing’ is where governments and corporations invest big dollars in sports ownerships and sponsorships in an effort to improve their reputations. And we’ve seen the Gulf States, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE, throw eye watering amounts of money at the biggest sports events and organisations, all over the world, to improve their brands and grow their influence. It has been cause for concern for human rights activists, fans and sectors of the sports industry. So we’ve brought in an expert to talk us through the big picture of ‘sportswashing’ and the growth of the Gulf States, to help us understand the reality of the issue beyond the headlines and what it means for the future of sport. Dr David B. Roberts is an associate professor and senior lecturer at King’s College in London, with a primary focus on international relations, politics and security in the Gulf States.  He is Adjunct Faculty at Science Po’s Paris School of International Affairs, and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Arab Gulf States Institute Washington. Previously, Dr Roberts was the Director of the Qatar office of the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies. Dr Roberts is the author of the newly released Security Politics in the Gulf Monarchies. Dr Roberts says ‘sportswashing’ is a more nuanced issue than what most people realise. The big spending Gulf States are entering a new era and are building a new image, backed by a younger generation with different values.  The ‘sportswashing’ debate highlights the difficulty in countries and cultures imposing on one another ‘what is right and what is not’.  Dr Roberts says the big money won’t last forever - there might only be 10 years before the cash runs out, so the investment is crucial for shaping the future of the Gulf States.  Dr Roberts says the leaders behind these big investments in sport are bitter at receiving so much pushback and criticism. He also gave great insight into the influence of the Gulf States on the English Premier League, and the bigger concern of ‘financial doping’ as sport becomes a case of ‘the haves and the have nots’.  While Australia isn’t majorly affected by ‘sportswashing’ from the Middle East, Dr Roberts says these nations could look to emulate the country as a model for success. Athletes and the media: An uneasy relationship

Sports stars live in a fickle world. Kyle Chalmers knows this better than anyone.  After stunning the world to win Olympic gold in the 100m men’s freestyle final in 2016 at just 18 years of age, the quiet country kid instantly hit celebrity status.  Continued domination at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and all other international swimming events solidified Kyle’s reputation as Australia’s golden boy of the pool.  But Kyle quickly learned that those who celebrated his success could, and would, quickly turn on him. In the lead up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the media put Kyle at the centre of a scandal, putting the blowtorch on him and his teammates, piling on so much pressure that Kyle’s mental health suffered to the point where he planned to quit swimming.  Instead of giving up, Kyle fought back. The Draft: Delightful or dysfunctional?

AFL legend Anthony Koutoufides was the prototype ‘modern’ footballer. More than an incredible athlete, Kouta became a superstar brand in the 90s and changed the game for the players that followed. Joining Carlton on a contract worth about $8000 a year, he went on to become arguably the AFL’s first million dollar man. Kouta played 278 games for Carlton between 1992 and 2007. He’s a two-time All-Australian, he captained the Blues for three years and was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2014, and more importantly, he’s a Carlton premiership player. Kouta had a personal sponsorship with Adidas in 1997 which his club tried to force him out of, after doing a team deal with Nike. Kouta and his management fought back and won, in a move that would open up new commercial opportunities for every AFL footballer going forward. Kouta joins Tredders and Dion to talk about this and much more, including the pressures of being one of the AFL’s biggest stars, being a victim of Carlton’s salary cap saga, what he’s learned from the highs and lows of his career and what Kouta's future looks like in health and fitness with his brand, Kouta Fit. Anthony Koutoufides on building the prototype athlete brand

In our first Talkback With Tredders episode, AFL great Warren Tredrea has called for leading Australian sports organisations to drop their partnerships with betting companies.  Tredders took questions from The Big Deal audience which included tackling the big issue of betting sponsorships in sport. In the wake of the AFL’s Brownlow Medal betting saga, Tredders challenged Australia’s major leagues to show leadership and pull the pin on gambling partnerships and in-game betting ads.  He said organisations like the AFL don’t need the revenue, and believes the social issue of gambling addiction is so important that if players had to take a pay cut to cover the shortfall, so be it.  Tredders and The Big Deal team unpacked the potential ramifications of such a move.
