About the episode

Ben Gillies believes the way he and his bandmates were raised in Newcastle may have contributed to the breaking up of the band. At the age of just 8 years old Ben starting to play music with Daniel Johns. By the age of 12, Chris Joannou had joined the band and Silverchair were officially formed. Just four years later the band were winning ARIAs, touring internationally and appearing on US late-night talk shows. Ben Gillies joins Sarah Grynberg to discuss life growing up in Newcastle, New South Wales and how he loves it so much, he has never moved away. Young fame bought him to a world where school days were mixed with playing arenas to thousands of people and receiving late night phone calls from adoring fans. Ben also discusses his new book Love and Pain which he has co-authored with bandmate Chris, detailing the rise and fall of Silverchair, and what he believes needs to happen for Ben and Chris to ever find any sort of peace with Daniel Johns. Love & Pain: The epic times and crooked lines of life inside and outside Silverchair is available now.
