He’s helped create some of Australia’s most memorable comedic characters, battled tirelessly to elevate Football (the proper round ball kind!) to the upper echelons of Australian sport, and most importantly, he’s the father to 2 (now adult) sons. But before looking at his own dadding, Santo takes us back to Melbourne in the 1960s and 70s, painting a vivid picture of the multi-generational approach to parenting that he experienced growing up in a migrant family, especially the huge role his grandfather played. Things were a touch looser back then! With his own kids now young adults, Santo is able to explain to us how his approach to parenting has changed over the years. But he’s come to think there are a couple universal elements, and he borrowed them from some advice the late, great John Clarke gave on comedy writing. John said audiences like two, seemingly incompatible things… consistency and variation. Santo reckons kids are the same. How Ben Quilty Dads - Drawing lessons from life and a life drawing lesson!

As a prolific co-creator of Australian comedy classics like Upper Middle Bogan, Wayne is probably more comfortable bringing to life hilarious, and hilariously flawed characters, rather than reflecting on his own life. But we know Wayne to be so thoroughly kind, thoughtful and wise that we really put the screws on him to come and have a chat. Thankfully he agreed! And not just any expert, but leading behavioural paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Dr Billy Garvey. Health and fitness industry expert and entrepreneur Sam Wood has a beautifully honest chat with Hame about his dadding journey.   From what’s like to begin your dadding with a 9 year old step daughter, to then only eight short years later having 4 daughters, Sam shares with Hame the struggles he’s had learning on the job with a teenager, how he tries to instil adventurousness and positivity into his kids each day and how the death of his mother when he was a teenager completely reframed the relationship with his own father. Sam also recounts how the birth of their 4th daughter was not straightforward and how the resulting lengthy hospital stay affected him and the family. Adventurer, filmmaker, outdoor education specialist, dad… Beau Miles has got lots of cool descriptors. He’s also infectiously positive and creative, and he put all these things to amazing use in this very different, very outdoorsy and very wet episode. How Scott Cam Dads

He may have played 350 games of AFL - but as Eddie’s wife always reminds him - his job is only just beginning… for his kids, and for his people. Eddie, with his wife Anna, have 5 young children, so pre-season training pales in comparison to the high contact sport of dadding that many kids.  His lunch box game is elite!  But as Hame learns in this fascinating chat, for Eddie, supporting a family is linked inextricably with a supportive community. Growing up playing at his grandfather's house, Eddie explains how he began learning his dadding skills from a young age, and how now in the suburbs of Melbourne he is fostering community not only for his kids, but for many of the young indigenous footballers that leave behind their support structures to play AFL. An old friend of Hame, and according to his daughters an old dad, Christian O’Connell is a bona fide legend of radio broadcasting. And really, he’s not even old! He explains how he tries to shepherd his kids rather than control them, his family's experience with neurodiversity and ASD, and how he applies reason, logic and in his words “anti-drama” to his dadding. Tim is a real clever clogs and thinks deeply about, well… everything. And he is super honest. It makes for a chat that is both wisdom filled and thought provoking. But underpinning it all for Tim is the fervent belief that if your kids know unequivocally that you love them for who they are, you’re doing a lot right. Former teacher and assistant principal, current powerhouse of enthusiasm and expertise, Martin Heppell, or just Rac as he is known to friends, blows Hame away in this episode. In a double rule breaking season finale, Hamish goes over his 1 hour &amp; 3 minute episode time limit AND talks to an expert! Our special guest is Dr Billy Garvey, a Behavioural Paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital (Melbourne) and leading expert on childhood development. (And he’s also a dad). As a wonderful surprise to us, it turns out Dr. Billy has listened to some of the podcast (which made Hamish blush) and upon Hames getting in touch with Billy, he told us something really interesting… that heaps of stuff our guest dads were stumbling across or bringing up anecdotally, actually had some scientific evidence behind it. So we thought it might be really great to revisit some excerpts from previous episodes where our dads have dropped nuggets of gold and get Billy to explain the literal neuroscience behind it, describe why it’s great for our kids and help us all understand how small actions from us as parents can have outsized effects on our kids, now and for the rest of their lives. That’s worth going over an hour for, surely?! Billy talks plainly and passionately about this subject and really, really knows his stuff.  Although, as the father of an 18 month old, he is also the first to admit that he’s still learning some tough practical lessons everyday.  We are so thankful to Billy for taking the time to listen to previous shows and sit down with Hame, and we think you’ll all agree what he chats about is both inspiring and practically very useful. Wild Rule Breaking Season Finale with Dr Billy Garvey

Decorated soldier, Mark Donaldson VC kindly joins Hame on the HODD couch to share tales from his dadding journey so far. Mark shares his experience of trying to be available to his kids and playing and existing in their world, even if he’d just returned from a deployment.  The guys discuss the idea that all kids have “their version of trying” and the challenges of not projecting our own standards onto them (that we have probably only come to appreciate and understand in adulthood!). They finish off by discussing the power of adventure in creating memories and the benefit of getting kids into nature to build resilience and problem solving skills. Mark is a man that probably subscribes to the mantra “Deeds, Not Words” and is never one to blow his own bugle. But as Australia’s first Victoria Cross recipient for over 40 years, he found himself in a unique position of notoriety and influence.   If you don’t know much about Mark, Hame does a lightning fast bio in the intro, quickly touching on his military record and also that he lost both his own parents at a young age. Australian Test Cricket Captain, Pat Cummins was rated the world's best bowler in March 2022.  But at the very same time, he was a brand new parent trying to figure out how this dadding thing works. Pat very kindly sat down with Hame to chat about his first year of being a dad. The pain of extended time apart from family, the challenge of making time count when he is at home and the inspiration that his own parents give him (even if they did forget his little sister at soccer practise once - but he is one of 5 kids, so cut ’em some slack we say).   The guys also chat about the benefit of diabolically long &amp; boring road trips, and how David Warner has shown Pat how to show up for your kids even in the middle of a test match.  Hamish also shows his age by having to explain to Pat what the film Two Hands is about, and why he can’t leave his phone on the beach while he swims. A legend of Australian comedy, Hughesy is used to dealing with a tough crowd at times.  But it seems his three kids provide the best heckles! How Dave Hughes Dads

Fresh off winning the AFL Grand final in 2021, Max Gawn hit the jackpot again three weeks later with the birth of his first child. Captain of the Melbourne Football Club, five time All Australian Ruckman, and all round good guy, Max first became friends with Hame because they liked riding bikes up big hills. Now they share stories about their other passion… not the Melbourne Football Club (this time), but their kids. When we recorded this episode, Max’s son was still only 7 months old, so he was super new to the whole dadding thing.  But his insights are great, and it’s clear the same dedication and thoughtfulness that has taken him to sporting greatness is now being applied to his dadding. In this episode, Max and Hame talk about the ongoing challenge of remaining present with your kids, how modern parenting fits with a career in the AFL and what gold standard dadding looks like to Max.  Hame also has a bit of a laugh at the fact Max still thought he had a say about what goes on in his life, and that he could keep going to Oktoberfest.  How cute. Nazeem Hussain is stand-up royalty in Australia and a perennial headliner of festivals at home and abroad.  But perhaps his biggest gig is being a dad to two young kids.   Naz and Hame laugh a lot in this episode, but Naz also generously shares stories from his childhood, which largely saw him and his sister raised solo by their Mum.  He talks about seeking out father figures as a kid, and now as a father himself, the search for dadding wisdom continues (which mostly consists of him reading just the first few pages of tons of parenting books!)   Naz is a guy that obviously takes his dadding gig really seriously, thinks deeply about how to nail it everyday, and peppers Hame with some great questions of his own.  The guys swap tips on how to safely throw a kid in the air, lament the sheer panic of being poorly judged if your kid acts up in the playground, and debate the Newtonian aspects of gravity as a metaphor for constant inescapable love. As founder of The Resilience Project, a program that reaches 500,000 kids around Australia every year, Hugh van Cuylenburg has been talking to parents for ages.  However, he’s the first to admit being a parent is a whole different story! In this episode, Hugh shares with Hame some bloody funny stories, but also some really raw reflections on Dadding.  Hugh’s honesty is one of a kind, and it led to a chat with Hame that we are sure will leave many listeners nodding in silent appreciation of a shared experience.  There is also some much deserved praise of Bluey! Hugh began his career as a school teacher and quickly became focused on improving the wellbeing of his students, eventually leading him to start The Resilience Project.
