Tom Segura's Racial Fight

This week, we've got a rerun with recent Saturday Night Live alumn Aidy Bryant! In addition to Aidy being a highlight of the show since she joined in 2012, she also starred in and executive produced the Hulu series Shrill, a show that is “about a fat young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body.”
In this Good One episode, Jesse talks to Aidy about her SNL sketch “Overnight Salad,” a digital short that aired in the last episode before quarantine shut down in-studio production. As Aidy discusses in the interview, it’s a sketch that she might not have felt comfortable pitching or writing much earlier in her career. Similarly, Shrill feels like a creative milestone in Aidy’s career, with characters and humor that feel more authentically Aidy.

Creator and star of the ABC sitcom Cristela, Alonzo was the first Latina woman to create, produce, write, and star in her own US primetime comedy. Her debut Netflix special Lower Classy was released in 2017, and now Cristela's back with her second: Middle Classy. Instead of choosing a joke from her aforementioned new special, Cristela decided to go with something a little more symbolic of her life and career as a stand up: Hello, Es NASA. Not only is it the first joke she ever wrote about her family, but it's one of her first big jokes, period. From Conan to Last Comic Standing, to getting feedback that directly led to jokes written for Middle Classy, this joke and interview are a case study for Cristela Alonzo's success.

On this week’s episode, standup comedian wunderkind Taylor Tomlinson (Self-Helpless podcast) talks about becoming one of the youngest comics ever to have their own Netflix one-hour stand-up special. Her path to taping her hilarious Quarter-Life Crisis at the age of 25 is an extremely nontraditional one: she started as a teenage Christian comedian, after taking a stand-up class with her father. This meant to fully become the comedian she wanted to be, she had to distance herself from her church and her dad.
As a result of her religious upbringing, Taylor lost her virginity after she had already become an established comedian. The joke she discusses this episode mines the absolute absurdity of that for comedy, while slyly touching on more serious issues of consent. All building to a perfect classic movie reference!

This week, host Jesse David Fox sits down with New York stand-up comedian Shane Torres to discuss one of the greatest jokes of the last decade - Torres’s now legendary defense of Guy Fieri.

Quickly he realized he was onto something special and that there was room to build on it. A year later, the result was both hilarious and surprisingly poignant. After going viral in the summer of 2017, the joke forever changed the perception of Guy Fieri in our culture, revealing the power of comedy.

Shane Torres's Guy Fieri

This week, host Jesse David Fox sits down with Jamie Demetriou, the creator/writer/star of the acclaimed British comedy, Stath Lets Flats.
 
During the summer, Stath Lets Flats took home the Best Scripted Comedy award at the BAFTAs, beating out Catastrophe, Derry Girls, and even Fleabag. To translate the title to American English, Stath is Jamie’s character’s name and “lets flats” means leases apartments. That’s what the show’s about - a English-Greek idiot working at his family’s leasing agency.
 
The scene we play comes from season 2, episode 5, in which Stath goes on a double date with his sister, Sophie (played by Jamie’s real life sister, Natasia). Sophie brings her new boyfriend, Cem (David Mumeni). Stath asked Sophie’s roommate/music and dance partner, Katia (played by Natasia’s real life comedy partner, Ellie White), who said no, but showed up anyway. When she said no, Stath invited his best friend Al (Al Roberts), but the only problem is Al and Sophie secretly love each other. Comedy ensues!

Stath Lets Flats' Pizza Double Date

This week, host Jesse David Fox sits down with the reality bending comedic rapper Nikki Fre$h, aka Nicole Richie!

Nicole is known for starring in The Simple Life alongside Paris Hilton from 2003-2007. After the show wrapped, Nicole filmed Candidly Nicole, which she started as a web series in 2013 before running for 2 seasons on VH1 from 2014 and 2015. Her most recent endeavor is a new Quibi show, Nikki Fre$h, and its accompanying album Unearthed. Like every track on the album, there’s a music video for the song that was included in an episode of the Quibi series. We’re starting with her song Bee’s Tea, an homage to bees The episode co-starred Bill Nye and Nicole’s real-life father, Lionel Richie.
